Notes - BROWN, MARIE WHITUS, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, atNHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. The daughter of Edward and Cora MaeKoontz Whitus, she was born March 12, 1914, in the Petros community ofMorgan,County and received her early schooling in Petros. Mrs. Brownwas a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and had been amember of Sunrise Chapter 364 of the Order of Eastern Star in Petrosfor more than 50 years. She was the widow of Charlie Carson Brown. Sheand her husband lived in Oak Ridge for several years, and she wasemployed by Dr. Jim Kile of Oak Ridge. She became acquainted with Ruthand Charles Barton through a mutual membership in Glenwood BaptistChurch. Later, after the death of her husband, she lived in KKnoxvilleand was employed for 10 years at Lakeshore Mental Health Institute.Highlights of her post-retirement years were two trips she made toIsrael. Several years after retirement, she moved to the brickapartments in Oak Ridge near the Oak Ridgdge Mall. Her neighbor KitKuperstock became a close friend. She lived several years at the OakRidge Retirement Center, being cared for under the personalizedassisted-living program. After falling and breaking a hip, she wasmoved to NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Brown is survived by asister, Louise Evans of Medina, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Brownof Oak Ridge; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to herparents and her husband, a stepson, Roy Giltz Brown, four brothers,Alton Whitus, Tom Whitus, Guy Whitus and J.B. Whitus, and three othersisters, Emma Ruth White, Inez Foster and Lee Jackson, died earlier.Burial at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oak Ridge Highway, Clinton.
