- Coal Miner Killed In Slate Fall
First Accident At Pocahontas Mine In 9 Years
CROSS, FLETCHER L., 32-year-old miner of Oliver Springs Rt.1 andfather of six children, was killed Monday in a slate fall at thePocahontas coal mine near Devonia.Cross was operating a shuttle car atthe time of the accident.Reports said Cross heard rumblings of animpending slate fall and started to run-but in the wrongdirection.Officials reported that it was the first accident at themine in the past nine years.The victim was a member of the Masons andthe Order of the Eastern Star. Funeral services were to be heldThursday at 2 p.m. at Middle Creek Baptist Church near Petros.TheRev.Homer C. Hooks is to conduct the services and burial will be inthe Estes Cemetery.Survivors are his wife, Clara, sons, Fletcher LeonJr., Clarence William and Verlon Dean,of Oliver Springs, sisters, Mrs.Ruth Scholfield,Lafollette, Mrs. Geneva Cook,Rockwood, Mrs. EstelleWard and Miss.Venedean Cross,Gesuga Lake, Ohio, daughters,Audrey,Phyllis and Marie Cross,Coalfield, brothers, Clarence,Guy,Willard, J.W. all of Coalfield and Willliam Cross of Ohio.Cox at LakeCity is in charge.
