  	per May McGlothin writings he was born 25 April 1926. Samuel graduated from Coalfield High School in 1940. He volunteeredfor the Navy in 1942, serving on a submarine, assigned as a medic tothe Marines on Gaudal Canal, Guam, and Cook Island, of the CarolineIsland group. He was discharged in 1945. He was a coal miner for 16 years and worked for the U.S. Postalservice for 21 years before retiring. Dot and Perry Byrd did not own a car in the early 1960s and walkedfrom their home in Back Valley to Middle Creek Church where they weremembers. Judy Kesterson remembers often stopping to pick them up ontheir way home or to church, particularly in 1959-1961 time period. Judy also remembers visiting their house in Back Valley when a childdied or was ill. She remembers that there was food on a table coveredby a table cloth and there were flies everywhere.

  BYRD, SAMUEL PERRY - age 82 of Oliver Springs, passed away December26, 2003 at the Roane Medical Center at Harriman. Mr. Byrd was a WorldWar II Veteran, he entered the Navy in 1941. He served in the SouthPacific where he was rated as Pharmacist Mate First Class. He washonorable discharged in September of 1945. He worked for the UnitedStates Postal Service where he retired. He was of the Baptist faith.Survivors include his wife, Dortha Owens Byrd of Oliver Springs; onedaughter, Barbara (Barbi) Cannon of Coalfield; one daughter in law,Nancy Byrd of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Cindy Denise Byrd ofKnoxville, Perry Scott Cannon of Coalfield, Carey Beth Byrd of OakRidge; two great grandsons, Samuel Scott Cannon of Oliver Springs andJayden Kane Byrd of Oak Ridge. Preceded in death by his parents,Jerome and Dessie Jacks Byrd; sons, Charles Perry Byrd, George Edger Byrd, James William (Buster) Byrd.Pallbearers for Mr. Byrd's service will be, Gary Lively, David Owens,Lance Owens, Kelby Rice, Andy Fadnek, Don Owens and Tom Poole.Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Tucker, Roy Tucker, J.W. Cross andJohn Cross. Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Saturday, December 27,2003 at the Oliver Springs Mortuary. Funeral service will be at 8 p.m.Saturday December 27, 2003 in the chapel of the Oliver SpringsMortuary with the Rev. Charlie Marlow officiating Interment will be at2 p.m. Sunday December 28, 2003 at the Davis Cemetery in Coalfield.Oliver Springs Mortuary will be handling the arrangements.
