- Claude H. Oakes, Jr., age 82, a resident of the Clax Gap community in Roane County, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the Renaissance Terrace Health Care Center in Harriman.
Mr. Oakes was born on the 26th day of January, 1932 in Devonia, at Moore's Coal Camp. He and his family moved to Back Valley Road in Coalfield, in 1944.
In 1950, at the age of 18, Mr. Oakes was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean war. While serving he received several medals, citations, ribbons and accommodations. Following his military discharge he returned back to Tennessee.
He was always busy and he loved working. He was employed for 32 years as a truck driver and mechanic at Overnight Freight. His greatest hobby was fishing and he knew Watts Bar Lake like the back of his hand.
Claude was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Hobson Oakes and Bessie Jackson Oakes, and by his wife, Judith Farmer Oakes.
He is survived by a son, Terry Oakes of Harriman, by grandchildren; Eric Lee Oakes and wife, Stephanie, of Coalfield, Derick C. Oakes and wife, Stephanie, of Harriman, and Katherine Lucille McGee and husband, Jameson, of Oak Ridge and by six grandchildren; Sydney, Olivia, Tristan, Zoe, Alia and Ethen.
Mr. Oakes is also survived by sisters; Mozelle Braden and Jessie Mae Vineyard of Mossy Grove, by several nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of special friends.
The family will receive friends Saturday, March 22, 2014, between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 pm, at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 7:00 pm, in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Ronald Guthrie officiating. Burial and graveside services, with full military honors, will be held Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 2:00 pm, at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
