Notes - Samuel Lewis Brummitt, 78, of Clinton Rt. 4, died Wednesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital, Knoxville3. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Clinton. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Saturday at the Second Baptist Church with thhe Rev. George Williams and the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Cemetery with Holley Funeral Home of Clinton in charge. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Stella Smith Brummitt; six daughters-Mrs. Elsie Justis, Remington, Inc., Mrs. Frances Hammonds, Coalfield; Mrs. Pauline Davis, Rockwood; Mrs. Aggie Reynolds, Norris, Mrs Maggie Rutherford, Andersonville; Mrs. Mildred Gray, Clinton; three sons-Charles Brummitt, Whiting Ind., Elmer and Bill Brummitt, both of Clinton; one brother, Willie Brummitt, Coalfield; one sister, Mrs. Lillie Hendricks Clnton; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Per the 1900 census, Samuel is Samuel Vann rather than Brummett. He resides with his mother, Mary Vann. Mary most likely went back to her maiden name (Vann) 38 years after her husband (Wiley E. Brummett) died. However, she could have married the father of her children, listed in one family tree as George Washington Wash Vann and John Parker Vann.
