Another source says his birthdate was January 1901 and death date was 1948. This has not been substantiated.
June Kesterson McGlothin remembered when her Uncle Alonzo and Aunt Grace were living with May McGlothin, Grace's sister, in Coalfield. Alonzo taught school at Coalfield. He and June would walk to school together, even in the snow.
When Alonzo was shot and killed by Grace and May's sister Ruth's husband, there was no arrest, trial, etc. It was hushed up. No one in the Potter family had the money to buy off the sheriff, despite their high living. No one knows why Ruth's husband was not arrested.
Later, Ruth's husband had a broken neck--I do not remember why--but he was bed fast with paralysis for several years and died a miserable death.
Their son, Ernest West, was a crook and a thief and got money from his great aunts by telling them he had cancer and could not afford to pay for the treatment. He was described as a sucker by one family member. His family were finally cut off when May/Grace/Hazel/Willard/Ruth all died and there were no more people who would give him money. He died shortly thereafter of cancer. Ironic.
