- Grace E. (Kesterson) Sweet , Grace E. Kesterson Sweet, age 90, a resident of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at NHC of Oak Ridge. Grace was born March 6, 1918, in Peabody, Tenn., and lived most of her life in Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Sweet was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. She was known for her great faith in God and she was always eager to present Christ to each one she came in contact with. Grace was one of the few remaining people of Oak Ridge who knew John Hendrix and his vision for the town of Oak Ridge.
She was an avid gardener who thoroughly enjoyed sharing her flowers as well as her ceramics and wood crafts with her many friends and family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Sweet; a son, Arlie Thomas Sweet; her parents, Sam W. and Mary Belle Cox Kesterson; and brothers, Paul, Samuel and Jesse Kesterson.
She is survived by sons, Clarence Alvin Sweet and wife, Joyce, of Knoxville, and James Sweet and wife, Linda, of Powell; sisters, Dorothy Riggs and husband, Jack, of Dayton, Ohio, Martha Hill of Harriman, Helen Christopher and husband, Oliver, of Petros, and Ruth Lackey of Coalfield; grandchildren, Bryan Sweet, Susan Hammontree, Kellye Bennett, Jeffrey Sweet, Bradley Sweet, and Christi McGinnis; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sandra Walls Kesterson of Coalfield, and Lucille Kesterson of North Carolina; and a host of friends and extended family members.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow in the funeral home chapel at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Steve McDonald officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family expresses their most sincere gratitude to the staff of Caris Health Care and National Health Care of Oak Ridge for the care given to Mrs. Sweet during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 163 N. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
